EL PASO, Texas – A large gathering of students and football players from Bel Air High School staged a protest on Wednesday, advocating for the reinstatement of their coach, Sergio Delgado, who has been placed on administrative suspension.
With signs, balloons, and chants, the young athletes congregated in front of the school to voice their support. “We feel frustrated; the team is united in wanting our coach back,” stated Diego Alejandro Atayde, a player on the team.
Delgado has led one of the city’s most prominent sports programs for over 20 years, taking the Highlanders to a state championship victory in 2019 in division 5A. His students assert that his absence has significant repercussions for both their athletic performance and team morale, particularly affecting seniors who are exploring college opportunities.
“The coach is a vital part of our future; we want to continue developing through football,” added fellow player Dilan Amezcua.
In response, the Ysleta Independent School District released a statement confirming that Delgado has been placed on administrative suspension. Due to the nature of the personnel matter, they are unable to provide further details.
