At around 1,800 measuring points throughout Bavaria, police and employees of local authorities and municipal traffic monitoring units are keeping an eye out for speeders. Above all, however, checks are also carried out where the risk of accidents caused by speeding is greatest or where speeding is frequent. The Aurora Police Department has launched the deployment of mobile speed cameras across various locations in the city identified as high-risk for drivers, aimed at reducing severe accidents related to speeding.

The initiative begins with a 30-day educational warning period, during which no fines will be issued. Monetary penalties will be enforced starting December 17.

“We’ve heard you, Aurora. Speeding has become an increasing concern, and we are taking steps to make our roads safer for everyone,” stated the department in a message via X platform.

Locations of the Cameras

The cameras will rotate through various city areas that have recorded traffic incidents or risk patterns, including:

  • Residential areas with speed limits of 35 mph or less
  • School zones
  • Streets bordering parks
  • Construction or roadwork zones

The selection of camera locations will be based on traffic safety data and collision histories, according to police. Residents are encouraged to suggest additional locations through the Access Aurora portal.

By law, each area where the cameras operate must have clearly visible signage informing drivers that they are entering an electronic speed control zone.

How the Cameras Operate

The devices will capture multiple photographs of any vehicle detected traveling at 11 mph or more over the speed limit. A police officer will then review the data to confirm whether a violation has occurred.

The monetary penalties are as follows:

Type of Violation Amount
General speed limit violation $40
Speeding in school zones $80
Driving over 25 mph above the limit Court citation (summons)

Violations recorded by the speed cameras will be categorized as zero point traffic violations and will not be reported to the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Allocation of Collected Fines

The police indicated that the funds generated from the fines will first cover the program’s costs, and any surplus will be invested in speed reduction and road safety projects in neighborhoods.

Why Aurora is Increasing Controls

Police have indicated that speeding is one of the primary causes of severe and fatal accidents in the city and cited studies showing that drivers typically reduce their speed after receiving a citation.

Mobility experts have warned that Aurora, like other cities in the Denver metropolitan area, is facing an increase in the severity of accidents, particularly in residential and school traffic areas.
