Governor Laura Kelly Concludes ‘People’s Budget’ Tour in Wichita with Clear Resident Priorities

Governor of Kansas, Laura Kelly, wrapped up her statewide ‘People’s Budget’ tour in Wichita on Wednesday, a series of forums created to hear directly from residents about their priorities for the upcoming state budget. The governor reiterated that her goal is to craft a budget that truly reflects the needs and values of Kansas residents while maintaining long-term financial stability.

“When done correctly, the state budget not only meets the needs and reflects the values of Kansas residents; equally important is that it remains sustainable in the long term,” Kelly stated to the audience.

Housing, Taxes, and Health: Dominant Concerns at the Forum

During the event, attendees voiced concerns about issues affecting thousands of families across Kansas. From rising housing costs and the need for tax relief to barriers in health access, residents took the opportunity to directly express their demands.

One of the most pressing topics raised was the potential expansion of Medicaid. One attendee inquired about the feasibility of extending coverage so that more residents can afford health insurance. Kelly responded that she has advocated for expansion for over a decade but acknowledged that current legislative prospects are not favorable.

Although the governor expressed limited optimism about immediate progress, she urged residents to continue advocating, asking them to reach out to their federal representatives and persist in emphasizing the need for affordable health coverage.

Concerns about SNAP Following Federal Shutdown

Another topic discussed during the forum was the future of SNAP benefits following the recent federal government shutdown. Some families expressed uncertainty about whether they would need to reimburse benefits received during that period.

In response to the concerns, Kelly was straightforward: “People will not have to pay back the money. This state will not ask for the money back,” she assured. “Families should be at ease—please buy food for your children.”

The governor aimed to alleviate fears regarding potential financial liabilities, emphasizing the state’s commitment to food security.

Focus on Sustainability and Civic Engagement

Kelly highlighted that the feedback collected throughout this tour will be essential in refining her budget proposal, which she plans to present early next year. She maintained that direct participation from residents will ensure that the priorities reflected in the budget are more accurate and widely representative of the citizenry.

The ‘People’s Budget’ tour has been one of the governor’s most visible initiatives in her effort to maintain a close relationship with Kansas residents. Through listening sessions, she has sought to strengthen dialogue between the state administration and the community, particularly on sensitive topics such as health, education, family economy, and housing.

The Importance of a People-Centered Budget

The governor reaffirmed that a people-centered budget must not only address immediate needs but also pave the way for future stability. Fiscal sustainability, she explained, is a key element in financing essential programs without jeopardizing the state’s economy.

Despite facing political challenges, especially on polarizing topics like Medicaid, Kelly assured that she would continue advocating for policies that benefit working families.

Next Steps

Kelly indicated that her formal budget proposal will be published in early 2026. The insights gathered in Wichita and from other cities across the state will help determine which areas will receive more attention and resources.

Meanwhile, the governor encouraged residents to stay engaged, participate in public discussions, and maintain contact with their representatives to ensure their voices continue to influence state decisions.
