San Diego, CA.- Thousands of San Diegans rose early this Thanksgiving Day to participate in the Turkey Trot organized by Father Joe’s Villages at Balboa Park. This cherished tradition, now in its 24th year, brought families together to run, socialize, and support a community cause.
Richie García attended with his daughter, continuing a beloved family tradition. “I started coming here every year with my dad… now I bring my daughter,” he remarked.
The Sosa family was also present, emphasizing the importance of physical activity and representing the Hispanic community. “We love being together and encouraging more families to join us,” expressed Carlos Alberto Sosa.
Over 8,000 participants filled the park, many donning costumes to enhance the festive atmosphere. However, the race serves a greater purpose: raising funds for the kitchens of Father Joe’s Villages.
Myrna Dávalos, the event organizer, explained that they aim to reach a goal of $600,000, which would provide up to 700,000 meals for those in vulnerable situations.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria highlighted the community’s solidarity. “Eight thousand people came out to support instead of sleeping in a bit longer. That shows we are all striving to end homelessness,” he stated.
