EL PASO, Texas — UTEP has suspended one of its men’s basketball players, Trey Horton III, after he was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated (DWI) over the weekend.

According to official documents, Horton, whose full name is Ronald Brete Horton, was taken into custody around 2:52 a.m. on Sunland Park Drive.

The police report indicates that a sergeant observed a vehicle stopped with the door open and the airbag deployed. Upon approaching the driver, identified as Horton, the officer inquired about the situation. Horton claimed that “the median appeared out of nowhere,” leading to the accident.

During the encounter, the sergeant detected a strong odor of alcohol, prompting a field sobriety test. Horton admitted to consuming at least three alcoholic beverages and stated that he had driven home after dropping off friends from a party.

Horton agreed to undergo a breathalyzer test, which resulted in blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) of 0.185 and 0.195, more than double the legal limit.

As a result of the incident, Horton did not participate in the start of UTEP’s basketball season.

In response to the situation, the university released the following statement:

“The UTEP men’s basketball team is aware of the situation involving Trey Horton and is in the process of gathering more information. For now, Trey is suspended from all team activities until further notice.”
