Walmart Halts H-1B Visa Job Offers in Response to Trump’s $100,000 Fee

Walmart, the largest private employer in the United States, has announced a suspension of job offers to foreign candidates who require H-1B visas to work in the U.S., as reported by a company spokesperson to CNN.

This significant shift reflects how major corporations are altering their hiring policies in response to the stringent immigration approach taken by the Trump administration, potentially impacting American companies and high-skilled foreign workers.

The policy modification by Walmart, initially reported by Bloomberg, comes shortly after President Donald Trump announced a $100,000 fee for H-1B visas designed for highly skilled positions that companies often struggle to fill.

The H-1B visa is a three-year work permit that can be renewed for an additional three years. Economists argue that this program enables American businesses to remain competitive and expand, ultimately fostering job creation within the U.S.

Major tech companies are the primary users of the H-1B program. Walmart, which boasts a rapidly growing online market that competes with Amazon, currently employs over 2,000 H-1B visa holders, according to government data.

“Walmart is committed to hiring and investing in the best talent to serve our customers while being prudent in our approach to H-1B hiring,” said a Walmart spokesperson to CNN.

The Trump administration asserts that the new fee is intended to curb abuses of the H-1B program. However, this recent measure may have significant consequences for the thousands of H-1B workers employed in the U.S. each year, alongside substantial costs for companies that rely on this program to attract highly skilled talent not readily available domestically.

This change is expected to disproportionately impact skilled professionals from India, who have consistently represented the majority of approved applications in recent years.
